The primary focus of the pre-doctoral internship program at the Keene State College Counseling Center is to train ethical, multiculturally-competent, and environmentally-minded psychologists who are exceptional in the provision of clinical psychological services, while fostering increasing confidence in their identity as an early career psychologist.

Interns are expected to improve or acquire the skills and knowledge that will help them succeed as an effective psychologist within a college counseling setting or other facility providing psychological services.

The Counseling Center staff believes that interns should develop excellence in the provision of psychological and outreach services, which will involve their recognizing and adhering to research-based best practices within the field.

As such, the internship program operates within the parameters of a practitioner-scholar model, and emphasizes intense practice by the interns as informed by outcome research within the fields of psychology and other human services.

This occurs under the monitoring of close, tailored supervision, which our staff views as a vital element to their effectiveness and professional development.

In addition to learning from practice and supervision, interns benefit from intentional staff modeling, as well as didactic trainings designed to increase their exposure and familiarity with critical elements of effective psychological practice.

Interns play a vital role in service provision at the Counseling Center; they are valued not only as key service providers, but also as the bearers of our profession as it moves forward.

As such, a very strong emphasis is placed on facilitating their professional identity development, from trainee to early professional psychologist.

Our staff believes that a key component of professional development is personal growth, and we attend to this by encouraging introspection, self-reflection, and appropriate risk-taking within supervision and other collegial activities.

Further, we do our best to socialize the interns to the roles and expectations of a professional staff member to smoothly facilitate the transition from trainee to autonomous psychologist.

Once interns have completed our internship, we expect them to be able to competently and confidently assume early career psychologist positions at college counseling centers or other psychological service organizations.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Doctoral program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and have completed the relevant coursework in their program minimum of three years allowing them to begin a pre-doctoral internship starting in the month of August.

Applicants should be highly motivated and eager to learn. We seek individuals who can work independently yet enjoy the interaction and cohesion of a staff that values each of its members and relies on one another.

Applicants will be considered based on their previous academic and clinical experience and how well their clinical, supervisory, and career objectives match with those of the training program and clinical staff.

Interns are expected to provide the highest level of clinical care in their work relative to their level of training as psychology intern and that the quality of care shall continue to reflect their increasing experience throughout their training year.

Intern caseloads average individual clients depending on intern and departmental needs. Interns will accrue at least total onsite hours during the course of the year.

Scheduled hours mostly occur between 8 a. This may happen once, twice, several times, or not at all. Interns are required to be available for the entire internship period beginning August 5, and ending July 24, They will also have designated time to work on their own dissertation research and job searches.

Interns begin the year with a gradual, yet thorough multi-week orientation, helping them adjust to the Center by getting to know the staff, as well as relevant systems and procedures.

Various trainings will then follow throughout the year. Each week interns participate in didactic seminars, case consultations, peer supervision, psychiatric case consultation meetings, program design meetings, and full-staff meetings.

Interns receive 2 hours per week of individual supervision with a licensed Psychologist, 1 hour of supervision per week focused on the topics of group psychotherapy and providing supervision to trainees, and 1 hour per week in staff group supervision.

Feedback will occur regularly during supervision hours, but may also be provided on an as-needed basis if solicited by the intern or deemed appropriate by a supervisor or another senior staff member.

Formal verbal and written evaluations five in total will be provided at mid-semester points, ends of semesters, and the end of the internship year which will occur during the summer term.

Ongoing feedback may address any area of clinical service and professional development; the formal evaluations will address all areas of clinical service provided during internship and may address particular areas of professional development as warranted or appropriate.

By the end of the internship year, an intern must have received positive final evaluations by both supervisors, completed on-site hours, and accrued at least direct clinical service hours, though significant efforts are made to ensure that interns accrue direct clinical service hours.

Intern salaries are complemented by a generous benefits package including medical and dental insurance, and professional liability coverage.

Interns receive eleven campus holidays, accrued days of vacation and sick leave, and liberal professional development time.

At the end of internship, interns will be financially compensated for any unused vacation days.
